Dollhouse Part 6 - Changes in the Shabby Chic Cottage Kitchen

Still working in the kitchen... it's finally starting to come together. I've added some things and changed some things completely, so I wanted to bring you an update on the progress.

With the light colors and the shabby chic cottage feel, the cherry finish dining table just seemed a little out of place, so I decided to refinish it. Here is one of the dining chairs before refinishing.  It had a cherry finish wood and red velvet cushions.

I repainted it with a cream color and gave it a distressed finish. Then I recovered the cushions with a tiny rose print fabric that I purchased from Etsy. Check out Memoriesnminiature Etsy Shop for some lovely dollhouse scale fabrics.

Here's a before and after of the table and chairs.

Table before - cherry finish
Table after - refinished shabby chic style

I added lace window treatments in the dining area that you can see in the picture above. Just click on the picture for a larger view. I made a roman shade for the kitchen window to match the curtain under the sink. The dish drainer and Dawn dishwashing liquid are from Ebay. I cut the tiny scrubby sponge from a regular size kitchen sponge.

I also refinished a pie safe cabinet from Hobby Lobby to match the table. The high chair came with a baby furniture set.

I love the real punched tin inserts in the doors of the pie safe.

The tiny pink house shaped teapot is another Ebay find.

With everything in place, the kitchen seemed so empty in the middle, so I decided to build an island.  There was plenty of room for a big island with lots of counter space for baking.

I gave the island the same creamy distressed finish as the dining set, with a pop of the cabinet color to tie it all together.

The mixer stand, cookbook, and metal dishpan are from Kerbey Lane Miniatures on Ebay.

Here's a complete overview of how the kitchen looks now.

I'm also working on a post about my newest doll addition, so look for that very soon.
Hugs!
Lisa

    1. Thank you Molly! I really struggled with whether or not I should refinish the dining set. I liked it before too, but I just wanted it to match better with the style of the rest of the kitchen pieces. The lighter color definitely makes that part of the room brighter.

    1. Thank you Jane! I had hoped it would look lived in, kind of like well worn vintage pieces from an antique shop. :)

    1. Thank you Amelia! The dollhouse is the Rose Marie kit from The House That Jack Built. I got the kit at Tuesday Morning. You can read all about the kit in my Building a Dollhouse, Part 1 post from February 2014 when I started building, at http://onceuponadollcollection.blogspot.com/2014/02/building-dollhouse-part-1.html

    3. Amelia, I love antique stores. I would love to find some antique miniature furniture. I saw a really old big German doll at an antique store this week. She was so pretty, but she had a pretty big price tag too. It was so much fun just to find her there though. I took a few pictures, so maybe I'll put them in a blog post so everyone can see her.

I hope you can get a dollhouse. By the way, if you see any miniature pieces that you really like, you may want to get them even though you don't have a dollhouse yet. I passed up quite a few pieces that I loved before I got a dollhouse, and now I wish I could go back and get them. Even if you don't have a dollhouse, you can set the pieces up to make a little room display on a shelf. That would be very cute and really fun!

  8. I like the dining set redo, but the wallpaper in that area seems to be a big contrast of red/black with all the pink/rose shades. Had you considered adding a pop of turquoise/blue gray/green to the table/chair paint? Perhaps just a thin faded pinstripe line on the edge?

Looking again, as a first step perhaps just add a table runner or placemats to pick up the wallpaper colors as a pop.

As pretty as the dish/tea set and fabric on the chairs are, I'd be tempted to go with a bright yellow, red or one of the other wallpaper colors.

Your entire dollhouse has so many fun details. Thanks for sharing it with us.
